Natural Compounds Present in Essential Oils
- Citral
Citral is an aroma compound used in perfumery for its citrus effect. Citral is also used as a flavor and for fortifying lemon oil. It also has strong antimicrobial qualities, and pheromonal effects in insects.
- Citronellol
Citronellol, is a natural acyclic monoterpenoid, it is found in citronella oils, oils of rose and Pelargonium geraniums. Citronellol is used in perfumes and insect repellents, and as a mite attractant.
- Geraniol
Chemical Compound. It is the primary part of rose oil, palmarosa oil, and citronella oil.
- Limonene
Limonene takes its name from the lemon, as the rind of the lemon, like other citrus fruits, contains considerable amounts of this compound, which contributes to their odor.
- Linalool
Linalool is a naturally occurring terpene alcohol chemical found in many flowers and spice plants with many commercial applications, the majority of which are based on its pleasant scent (floral, with a touch of spiciness)
- Tocopherol
Tocopherols are a class of organic chemical many of which have vitamin E activity.
- Farnesol
Farnesol is a natural 15-carbon organic compound which is an acyclic sesquiterpene alcohol. Farnesol is present in many essential oils such as citronella, neroli, cyclamen, lemon grass, tuberose, rose, musk, balsam and tolu.
- Benzyl Salicylate
Benzyl salicylate is a salicylic acid benzyl ester, a chemical compound most frequently used in cosmetics as a fragrance additive or UV light absorber.
- Benzyl Benzoate
Benzyl benzoate is an organic compound. It is the ester of benzyl alcohol and benzoic acid. It occurs in a number of blossoms (e. g. tuberose, hyacinth) and is a component of Balsam of Peru and Tolu balsam.
- Eugenol
Eugenol is a member of the phenylpropanoids class of chemical compounds. It is a colorless to pale yellow oily liquid extracted from certain essential oils especially from clove oil, nutmeg, cinnamon, basil and bay leaf.
- Phenethyl Alcohol
Phenethyl alcohol is an organic compound. It is a colorless liquid that occurs widely in nature, being found in a variety of essential oils. It has a pleasant floral odor.
